Religious and civil traditions
The heart of Novara di Sicilia beats in its religious and civil traditions, which represent a unique and varied cultural heritage. The "Mezzagosto novarese" centers on the nighttime procession of the Assumption (August 15). The artistic vara, illuminated by over 150 candles, is triumphantly carried on the shoulders of more than 30 men. On August 14, 16, and 22, Saint Ugo Abate is honored; his relics, placed on a 17th-century wooden fercolo, receive public veneration through the village streets. The feast of St. Anthony Abbot is celebrated on January 17 or the following Sunday. The penitential processions of the confraternities take place during Holy Week. Maiorchino Tournament
Every year, during the period before Carnival, the village streets turn into a festive arena for the Maiorchino Tournament. Here, numerous teams compete by rolling wheels of aged pecorino cheese through the crowded streets. This tradition, which began in the 17th century, blends play, folklore, and gastronomy, creating a unique atmosphere where sport and fun intertwine with local culture.
Awards and Heritage
The game of Mallorcan is more than just entertainment: since December 1, 2022, it has been recognized in UNESCO's Register of Good Practices for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, along with Tocatì, the program dedicated to the protection of traditional games. Furthermore, the tournament is included in the Food and Game project of the Ministry of Culture's Geoportal of Food Culture, which promotes the intersection of gaming tradition and gastronomic heritage.
